As I'm sure Ehret will mention, McKinley was assassinated. His replacement, Teddy Roosevelt, regrettably didn't follow through.

Teddy was a product of Harvard and the philosophy of William James. The negative of that idea to maintain a national esprit de corps was the necessity to do "War" so we had the Spanish American War and the philosophy of its alternative, war against nature so we saw the emergence of alternatives like the Soil and Water Conservation Service, Forest Service, Park Service, Reclamation Service.

William James indoctrinated multiple generations at Harvard. Today that idea is still with us expanding to the unfortunately corrupted Health and Human Services.

TR always struck me as a pompous, immature, warmongering jerk. HHS is in for a shock, assuming RFKJ is confirmed.
