Indeed, as Theodore Parker said in the 19th Century, "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." This is because evil lacks empathy and the patience to take a long-term view. Corruption leads to incompetence and absolute corruption leads to absolute incompetence. This is why corrupt political systems are bound to fail. It is also the message of the great dramatic tragedies.

Think of all the Greek epics and tragedies where the protagonist is given fair warning of long-term consequences but chooses to interpret the prophecy through his own short-term goals. A great empire will fall?
