I wonder if Xi even remembers his own Constitution and his people's rights...

- Article 35. Citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association, of procession and of demonstration.

- Article 36. Citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy freedom of religious belief. No state organ, public organization or individual may compel citizens to believe in, or not to believe in, any religion; nor may they discriminate against citizens who believe in, or do not believe in, any religion. The state protects normal religious activities. No one may make use of religion to engage in activities that disrupt public order, impair the health of citizens or interfere with the educational system of the state. Religious bodies and religious affairs are not subject to any foreign domination.\

- Article 41. Citizens of the People's Republic of China have the right to criticize and make suggestions to any state organ or functionary. Citizens have the right to make to relevant state organs complaints and charges against, or exposures of, violation of the law or dereliction of duty by any state organ or functionary; but fabrication or distortion of facts with the intention of libel or frame-up is prohibited. In case of complaints, charges or exposures made by citizens, the state organ concerned must deal with them in a responsible manner after ascertaining the facts. No one may suppress such complaints, charges and exposures, or retaliate against the citizens making them. Citizens who have suffered losses through infringement of their civil rights by any state organ or functionary have the right to compensation in accordance with the law.

I don't know why you felt the need to use the waybackmachine for this one. It's not like you are on the World Health Organization website (which is run by Bill Gates btw), when you could just get it off the Chinese government official website. Every Chinese student learns this stuff in school which is much more than can be said for the poor case of students in the USA or Canada (which was never actually granted a constitution by the Crown which still runs the entire government top down): https://english.www.gov.cn/archive/lawsregulations/201911/20/content_WS5ed8856ec6d0b3f0e9499913.html

as for the particular claims you are insinuating obliquely, it appears you have been enjoying your CIA propaganda. It's delicious stuff I'm sure but not for me.

Sorry Matthew, you are a great historian but dead wrong on a lot of China-related issues. We used to correspond together (a lot about our common interest in Poe), if you remember. I have lived 13 years INSIDE China up to last year. How many years did you live there? Also, I am not making false claims. First, go to the official URL http://en.people.cn/constitution/constitution.htm - you will see it does NOT work anymore (403 Forbidden, with or without VPN. Why do you think? Second, you are extremely naïve to think that Chinese school children learn their Constitution. They do NOT. I taught both in middle-school and high-school (top 2 schools in Shenzhen with the brightest kids in the city of 17 million) for several years and most did not even know about the Constitution, nor were they familiar with its content. I respect you very much as a historian and writer. But you really need to reassess your facts and takes about China. I don't disagree with a lot of what you write about how the West makes them to be a grand villain, but they have done a lot of really bad things over the last few decades which you almost never acknowledge or write about. A more balanced view would certainly be in order. Respectfully.

The link I sent you is for the government of China's website, so you sending me to a dead link while another link to the government's website hosts it implies you were simply mistaken about the memory hole 1984 reference. Also, you have told me your story in written form and I'm sure you were very unjustly treated in your area of China Dan. It sucks. I also have many friends who have either lived for decades or currently live in China and many of them teach. several are high school/university teachers and they do include the constitution in their curriculum. I'm sorry that your experience didn't have that. You got a bum deal but don't speak for all people living in China who have an overall positive approval of their government's performance, are still allowed to protest and do frequently all over China, and are enjoying rates of improvement in standards of living in the direct inverse proportion to the "free and liberal" west which you have escaped to. Now you are in Canada and can get easy government sponsored weed, euthanasia for being sad, and a frozen bank account for protesting your government alongside a middle class which is being exterminated. Great.

Hi again Matthew. Thanks for engaging. I really do appreciate it, for I thoroughly enjoy discourse. When you say "I'm sure you were very unjustly treated in your area of China Dan. It sucks. ", please don't assume how things were for me in China. In fact, I had a very positive experience there and never had any trouble other than minor/occasional annoyances. There were so many positives to living there, but that changed a lot - especially towards foreigners - in the last 4-5 years. I really wish you could have lived there to understand what I really mean. The changes Xi imposed as he strengthened his rule has negatively affected a lot of aspects of life for both locals and foreigners. How can you agree with the inhumane Zero-Covid policy he held until just a couple of weeks ago? Have you not seen all the related videos and sufferings? I invite you to go watch the videos of Laowhy86 & SerpentZA on YouTube and their weekly podcast "The China Show". Like me, these guys lived there for over a decade, have Chinese wives/kids/families, love the country and its people, and speak the language. They have a much more intricate and critical view about what real China (inside its borders) is like. So, there's a lot we won't agree on. for China. And that is okay. But, I totally agree with you about these absurdities taking place right here in Canada. That is why I decided to change my career from a long-time educator to an independent investigative journalist so I can expose a lot of these activities. I have written about all these subjects you mentioned, except for "weed". I invite you to have a look at my own substack (last 3 recent articles of interest: CBDC, Digital ID in Canada, and Digital Surveillance in Canada 2023). But I still respect a lot of your great work. Peace, take care and Merry Christmas my friend.
