Unbelievable mind - a steel trap encyclopaedia that I struggle to keep up with. You just cannot listen to any of Matt’s videos once. These days I keep them as a list to go back to time and time again. If you add in Mel’s comprehensive knowledge base as well it makes for a magnificent history lesson. Matt’s stuff is pure education - embrace it.

Hey Matt, I enjoyed this chat with Mel K. You mentioned the Empress Dowager Cixi again, and as once before had a few unkind words about her. I think you may have misjudged her. Some great insights can be found in Jung Chang's book, on Cixi, including de-classified Japanese archives, telling rather a different story. For example, Kang Youwei (100 Days Reform leader) was in the payroll of the Japanese, who were being groomed as a proxy to help conquer China. Also, the 100 Days Reform program had one secret clause that rather unsettled Cixi - the requirement for her assassination. That'd upset any monarch :-). Remember too that the teenage emperor was an idiot, totally under the thrall of his tutor, Wang, who advised him during the Sino-Japanese war to hide the Chinese navy in WeiHai, lest the Japanese sink the whole fleet (after the Japanese had conquered the LiaoDong peninsular, they simply commandeered the navy anyway).
